Jubilee of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences
In 2026, we will celebrate 210 years of tradition at the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW) – a university that has been contributing to the development of science, education, and social life for over two centuries. We are the oldest agricultural university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe. This anniversary is a special moment for us, and at the same time a commitment.
The origins of WUAS date back to 1816 and the establishment of the Agronomic Institute in Marymont. It was then, thanks to the vision and commitment of Stanisław Staszic and Stanisław Kostka Potocki, that an institution was created to educate future economic elites and specialists for the development of agriculture.
Over the years, the university’s fate reflected the turbulent history of Poland. We experienced Russification, forced closures, and relocations after the fall of national uprisings, yet we always managed to revive ourselves.

In 1918, with Poland regaining its independence, a new chapter in our history began. In independent Poland, we developed dynamically. New departments were established, new infrastructure was built, and SGGW strengthened its position as an important academic centre.
The period of World War II was a time of dramatic trials. The university was closed, but thanks to secret teaching, the tradition of education survived. We were the first university in Warsaw to inaugurate the new academic year on May 15, 1945. This event has become a permanent part of our DNA, and SGGW Days were established in its memory.
The post-war years brought further development and gradual consolidation of the university. The decision to move SGGW to Ursynów allowed for the creation of a modern campus, which today is one of the best-equipped academic centers in Europe. It is here, in a place with a rich history, that we continue our educational and research mission, responding to the challenges of the modern world.
Today, as the oldest natural sciences university in Poland and one of the oldest in Europe, we are proud of the achievements of generations of our scientists, teachers, and graduates who have contributed to the development of the state, the economy, and science, not only nationally but also internationally. In a world facing global challenges such as climate change, food security, environmental protection, and the dynamic development of new technologies, the role of science takes on particular significance. It is scientific research and education that allow us to understand phenomena that initially raise concerns and then transform them into solutions for the common good. For us, this anniversary is a moment to reflect on the past, but above all, it is an impulse for further development. I believe that science rooted in tradition, yet open to change, has a real impact on shaping the future of the world and responsibly organizing the reality in which we live.
I invite the entire academic community, our graduates, partners, and friends of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences to celebrate the Jubilee together and participate in scientific and cultural events that will express the continuity of our history and concern for the future. – said Prof. Michał Zasada, Rector of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences.
On this occasion, we have launched a new website dedicated to the anniversary celebrations. We cordially invite you to join us in celebrating the anniversary of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences and participate in the events prepared in its honour.
